It's a Problem.

How important is it to support small farms?

Very.

E.coli 0157:H7, the strain that can cause human illness, is found 80% less in Grass-Fed Cattle than in Grain Fed. The same reduction occurs when you simply pasture livestock on grass for a few days before slaughter.

Grain Fed ruminants in concentrated animal feedlots develop a whole host of diseases, and are consequently treated with antibiotics which in turn aid in the creation of super-resistant strains of bacteria...this is the same problem with using pesticides on crops; we are seeing the adaptation of super weeds, impervious to last season's chemical line-up.

In Pasture farming manure fertilizes the growing grasses. But in conventional concentrated animal feeding operations it becomes waste. Waste that runs off and contaminates water supply for other farming ventures...like veggie production.
